Grand
Canyon North Rim Road Map
Directions to North Rim Grand Canyon: From Zion National Park,
take on U-9 through the park to Mt. Carmel Jct. Turn south on US-89 to Kanab.
There is only one stop light in Kanab; this is where US-89 changes to ALT 89.
Fredonia, Arizona is 6 miles. In Fredona take 89A to Jacob lake (36 miles), then
take AZ 67 to the Grand Canyon North Rim park entrance.
Winter Road Conditions and
Highway 67 Road Closures

During the uplift of the Kaibab Plateau, the force of stress
caused this rock to fracture. This formed vertical joints that intersect with
horizontal bedding planes. The freeze/thaw cycle worked along the planes of the
rock, eroding the hole in the soft limestone forming a window.
What time is it at the North Rim Grand Canyon?
Arizona does not change time when most other states do, instead it remains
on mountain standard time year-round. The Navajo Nation however, does observe
daylight savings time change.

North Rim Grand Canyon
Bright Angel Point - A beautiful view of Bright Angel Canyon,
the long canyon below. Also seen is Roaring Springs Canyon, to the left and to
the right is the Transept. Look out into the chasm, the South Rim is seen. The
North Rim Lodge and the North Rim Visitors Centers are both located at Bright
Angel Point.
Location: Near the North Rim Visitors Center
Point Imperial - At 8803' it overlooks the painted desert
of the east end of the Grand Canyon. Point Imperial, the highest point of the
Grand Canyon, is 6600' above the Colorado River. There are great views of Mt.
Hayden from this view point. Marble Canyon can be seen as well as Saddle Mountain.
Location: N. terminus of the Point Imperial road
Vista Encantada - This view point offers a nice view of the
Painted Desert to the east, Brady Peak and the upper drainage of Nankoweap Creek.
Location: Walhalla Plateau. Near Roosevelt Point.
Roosevelt Point - This point offers a great view of the confluence
of the Little Colorado River and the Grand Canyon. The point was named after
Teddy Roosevelt. President Roosevelt, who in 1919, declared the land a national
park.
Location: Walhalla Plateau. 4.9 miles from Cape Royal.
Walhalla Overlook - One of the lowest elevations at the North
Rim. The Unkar Delta of the Colorado River can be seen from the rim at this view
point. The archeology ranger talk is held at the Walhalla Overlook and the ancient
ancestral Pueblo Kiva remains are located there. Nearby is the short hike to
an ancient granary.
Location: Walhalla Plateau near the Cape Royal parking lot.
Cape Royal - This point gives a panoramic view of the Unkar
Delta from the rim. This is the section of the park where the Colorado River
turns, called Unkar Canyon. Unlike at the South Rim, the Colorado River is seen
from many view points along the North Rim. Angels window is a treat along this
short walk and is a view point itself. Continue on the paved trail out to the
Cape Royal view point for the most spectacular view of the North Rim. The Desert
View Watchtower on the South Rim can be seen from this point.
Location: Walhalla Plateau. 23 miles from the North Rim Visitors Center
Point
Sublime - The name fits! Perhaps the best view in the Grand Canyon
next to the view at Toroweap.
Like Toroweap the trip to the rim is not an easy one. Be prepared to drive 36
miles on a dirt road that is only fit for high clearance 4WD's.
Are there bike paths and bike tours at the North Rim Grand Canyon?
Bikes are permitted on paved and dirt roads at the North Rim unless posted.
Bikes however are not allowed on any of the North Rim trails. Bicycles are allowed
on the roads unless posted otherwise, but like most National Parks, bikes are
prohibited on all trails. The shoulders are narrow and Arizona requires bikers
to follow the same rules that other traffic does. Bright clothing is recommended.
