Directions: East Zion to Staircase
From
Salt Lake City, travel south on I15 to U-20. Exit on U-20. Turn south on U-89
and follow U-89 to Glendale.
From Las Vegas: Travel I15 to exit 16. Follow U-9 to the south
entrance of Zion and through to the east entrance. Take U-9 for 12 miles to
Mt. Carmel Jct, where U-89 and U-9 meet. Drive north on U-89 to Glendale.
From Glendale, turn right on 300 N. (Bench Road) Follow the
graded dirt road, Skutumpah, into the Grand Staircase. Remember the Grand Staircase
is a wild and remote place. The dirt roads may be impassible when wet and there
is usually no water, services or cell phone access. Skutumpah is a backway and
should only be traveled in dry conditions. Call for road and weather information
before travel: 435.644.4680

The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument offers some
incredible slot canyon trails such as Willis Creek Slot Canyon and Lick Wash
Slot Canyon. Kids enjoy playing in the cubby holes of Lick Wash.

Check weather and
road conditions before
traveling any backway in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. The
rugged roads are a fun adventure, but it's primitive land and without services.

Scenic Drive - Grand Staircase Escalante

The Grand Staircase Escalante area is surrounded by some of the most impressive
primitive drives in the United States. Highway
89 is the southern boundary of
the Grand Staircase. From highway 89A, on the other end of the monument, the
five stairsteps can
be seen. The more primitive backways, such as Skutumpah
Road,
provide excitement for the more adventurous traveler.
Visiting the Grand Staircase
The North Rim of the Grand Canyon makes up the lower step and Cedar Breaks,
Red Canyon and Bryce Canyon form the top riser. Zion National Park is on the
edge toward the middle. None of these surrounding parks are part of the monument
but they are very much a part of the Grand Staircase geology.
Adventure in the Grand Staircase
Skutumpah Road
The Grand Staircase Escalante-National Monument entrance for this vacation
itinerary is 6 miles from Mount Carmel Junction. Venture into the wilderness
of the monument and hike the beautiful slot canyons, Lick
Wash and Willis
Creek. For the more adventurous add Bull
Valley Gorge to the trip.
Cottonwood Road
For a longer trip in the Grand Staircase add a trip along Cottonwood
Road.
The drive out to Grosvenor Arch, an impressive sandstone double
arch, and the Paria Movie Set would interest the windshield traveler that does
not want to get out and hike.
Getting ready for the next day
Back to Zion National Park for more hiking.
Day 6
Note: Check weather information prior to hiking these trails.
Flash floods are a danger in the Staircase as with any hike through a Slot Canyon.
Our "Canyon Country" trip is a vacation grand slam!
